Sun Devil Source: Arizona State associate head coach Antonio Pierce will be the team’s sole defensive coordinator and play-caller this season, with last year’s co-coordinator Marvin Lewis expected to return to the special advisor role he served with the Sun Devils in 2019 if he does not take an NFL head coaching job this offseason, according to people directly familiar with the program’s staffing plans.
Lewis, who has reportedly interviewed in recent weeks to fill head coaching vacancies with the Detroit Lions, Houston Texans and New York Jets, volunteered to his close friend, ASU head coach Herm Edwards, to spend one year in the co-coordinator role following the departure of previous defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales to New Mexico at the conclusion of the 2019 regular season.
