Former USC LB Cameron Smith could return to Vikings after open-heart surgery

247Sports: Former USC star Cameron Smith needs to undergo open-heart surgery, but he could still make his NFL return. Minnesota Vikings linebacker head coach Mike Zimmer updated the second-year linebacker’s situation Friday.

“I talk to Cam a little bit, but I’ll keep those (conversations) between us,” Zimmer said. “He’s a great kid. It’s disappointing for him. But honestly, it’s probably a blessing that this happened. He’ll be able to live a normal life and there’s a possibility he can play football.”

Smith tested positive for coronavirus, he announced Aug. 8 on his Instagram. Through the screening process, doctors discovered an abnormality with Smith’s heart.
