247Sports: Former Oregon star Justin Herbert got the start on Sunday after Tyrod Taylor was unable to play due to chest pains he was suffering. According to multiple reports, Taylor was taken to the hospital due to the chest pains. In his absence, Herbert hit the ground running and looked like the star he was drafted to be. Herbert was 22-of-33 for 311 yards and one touchdown in the air, while also scoring one on the ground in the three-point loss.
Many expected that a performance like that would put the Herbert in the driver’s seat for Los Angeles’ starting quarterback job. But it doesn’t appear to be the case. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Chargers coach Anthony Lynn told reporters in postgame that if Taylor is, “100 percent ready to go,” he will start for the Chargers in their next game.
