Sorting out report WSU players ‘released’ for sharing #WeAreUnited graphic

Update 2: Theo Lawson added that, “Per a source close to the situation, one #WSU football player, Kassidy Woods, has “formally” opted out of the fall season. Concerns around COVID-19 played a role in the opt-out, the source said. Once that happens, the school is obligation to find a safer situation for them.”

Update: According to Lawson, Kassidy Woods “has preexisting medical conditions that made him hesitant about playing this season. Nick Rolovich was understanding of that. John Woods reiterated multiple times, though, Rolovich did take issue with his participation in the movement.”

Sunday morning, Twitter was abuzz with the possibility that WSU players were being “released” for showing their support for the #WeAreUnited movement.

Later, Theo Lawson, WSU beat writer for the Spokesman Review, seemed to confirm at least one such incidence where that appeared to have been the case, and reported anecdotal evidence of several others.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports tweeted out a clarification that players who opt out will not lose their scholarship and will remain on the roster, and Lawson clarified some other points in his original tweet.

We’ll update this report further as it develops.
