Vilardo: Pac-12 NCAA Tournament Statistical Notes

Dana Altman and Mick Cronin have made a combined 27 Big Dance appearances

Some statistical notes on Oregon, UCLA, Colorado, USC, and Oregon State heading into the 2021 NCAA Tournament in Indiana.

Oregon

• Dana Altman is coaching in his 15th NCAA tournament, the 13th-most of any active head coach.

• Oregon finished the season with a 14-4 mark in Pac-12 play.  That brings their regular season conference win percentage over the last five season to .700 (63-27), the sixth-best among power conference teams.

• The Ducks are 4-1 this season following a loss.

• This season, Chris Duarte is getting 1.364 steals per foul committed, tied for the 13th-highest rate in the nation, and the highest among players in the NCAA Tournament.

• This season Oregon ranks 17th in the nation with a second half scoring margin of 5.5 points per game.

• VCU is fifth in the nation with a blocked shot rate of 9.6%; Oregon is getting 4.6% of their shots blocked—62nd-fewest nationally.

• The Rams are also getting a steal on 12.7% of their opponent’s possessions, the fourth-best rate in the nation.

UCLA

• This will be the 12th tournament appearance for Mick Cronin which ties him for the 16th most among active head coaches in the nation.

• Cronin’s 12 NCAA tournaments the most of any active head coach under the age of 50. In fact, if you look at active coaches 55 years old or younger, Cronin’s figure is second only to Matt Painter’s 13 (painter is 50). Sean Miller of Arizona is third on that list with 11 appearances at age 52.

• Cronin is one of just five coaches to have led his teams to the past 10 NCAA Tournaments. Michigan State’s Tom Izzo is also one of the other four. (Mark Few, Bill Self and Roy Williams make up the rest of that list).

• UCLA is the sixth-youngest team in the field of 68.

• The Bruins were in the midst of their first four-game losing streak since 2019 before defeating Michigan State on Thursday. The last time they lost five in a row was to end the 2015-16 season.

Colorado

• This season Colorado has held 26 of 30 teams to 72 points or less, the third-most in the nation. Among teams in the tournament, only San Diego State with 27 has more.

• Colorado is second in the nation with a FT percentage of 82.2%.  The Buffaloes are missing just 3.03 foul shots per game, the sixth-fewest per game.

• The Buffs are outscoring opponents by 5.9 points per game in the first half this season. The 22nd-highest first-half margin in the nation on the season.

• Colorado is looking to win a 23rd game in a single season for just the fifth time ever. All five 23+ win seasons have come under Tad Boyle.

• McKinley Wright is one of six players in NCAA Division I since the 1985-86 season with at least 1,800 points, 600 rebounds and 600 assists in his career.

USC

• USC has held 23 of 29 opponents this season to 72 points or less, tied for the ninth-most in the nation, and seventh-most among the field of 68.

• Evan Mobley is second in the nation with 1.642 blocked shots per foul committed.

• The Trojans are missing 7.69 FTs per game, the 10th-most in the nation, and the most of any team in the NCAA Tournament.

• USC ranks 16th in the nation with a total rebound rate of 55.0%

• The Trojans are eighth in the nation with a blocked shot rate of 8.8% this season.

• Evan Mobley was the first player ever named the Pac-12 Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

Oregon State

• Rodrigue Andela is attempting .706 FTs per FG attempt on the season, the 41st-highest rate of any player in the country.

• Andela is averaging 5.6 offensive rebounds per 40 minutes played, the 12th-most in the nation.

• In going 7-2 in the last 9 games, Oregon State has allowed 66.3 points per game.

• Oregon State is committing a foul on 28.2% of possessions this season, 328th in the nation.

• The Beavers are getting an assist on 59.4% of made FGs this season, the 25th-highest assist rate in the nation. During the Pac-12 Tournament, OSU’s assist rate was 57.3%.  Tennessee is 28th on the season at 59.2%

• For the season, Oregon State’s assist-to-turnover rate of 1.245 was second in the Pac-12 to Arizona, and 43rd nationally.

• Over the last 10 games, Warith Alatishe is averaging 9.4 rebounds and 13.0 points per game.
